Why has fluorescent lighting been held to minor roles in SSTV lighting?

SSTV requires color balanced lighting. The market is normally relates the specification of light required to a color temperature -

Kelvin rating. This does NOT work for fluorescent lighting! The color balance of a fluorescent lamp is NOT identifiable by a Kelvin rating. A Kelvin rating in fluorescent lamps results in a line though color space with an infinite number of points and not a specific point in color space. To maintain the color balance required for SSTV lighting fluorescent lamps must be specified with tightly controlled color specifications. The proper specification for fluorescent lamps includes a specified ellipse and a Color Rendering Index (CRI) rating. Most Fluorescent lamps available do not meet the lighting requirements of the SSTV market! Most fluorescent lamp manufacturers are not able to consistently produce fluorescent lamps that meet the requirement of the SSTV market.
