Medium Pressure Ultraviolet Lamps

Voltarc manufactures an extensive line of standard and custom design medium pressure mercury lamps. Standard catalog lamps are available in 100, 200, and
300 watt/inch rating and arc lengths from 2 to 77 inches. Higher watts/inch
are available.

Applications and Industries
Where Medium Pressure UV Lamps are Used:
Medium pressure mercury vapor lamps are used principally as a source of strong ultraviolet radiation for polymerization or "curing" of various materials. Primary uses include the curing of:

bulletpaint
bulletadhesives
bulletinks
bulletcoatings

These lamps are also used in various other photochemical processes.

Medium pressure mercury lamps require ballast specifically matched to the operating characteristics of the lamp. Ballast may be designed to operate at fractional power levels.

Technical
Voltarc's medium pressure UV lamps will operate properly only if the auxiliary equipment conforms to the physical, electrical and thermal specifications established by the engineering specifications.

The recommended operating bulb wall temperature range is 600°C to 750°C maximum. Higher temperatures will cause devitrification and distortion of the quartz envelope resulting in short lamp life, while lower temperatures will inhibit proper mercury vapor pressure resulting in reduced output. Temperatures of the seal area are the most critical, with the maximum temperature being 350°C. Using a radiation pyrometer is recommended technique for this measurement.

Handling, Life & Maintenance

MPUV lamps should be handled only when cold, with clean cotton gloves or wrapper. Should the lamps be touched with bare hand, clean with alcohol to remove skin oils and other foreign matter. Premature devitrification and reduced lamp performance may occur if lamps are improperly handled.

Lamp life depends on many variable factors: e.g., the number of starts, operating time per start, electrical and thermal operating parameters. Voltarc's medium pressure mercury vapor lamps are rated for 1,000 hours of life under proper operating conditions with a minimum of 4 hours of operation per start. U.V. maintenance of about 80% of initial output can be anticipated after 1,000 hours of operation under the proper conditions.
